Verse 38
धूमनाग्निप्रते वहिर्द्याधर्शो मतेन च। यथोन्मेनावृतो गर्भस्तथा तेनेदमावृतम्॥३८॥ आवृतं ज्ञानमेतेन ज्ञानिनो नित्यवैरेण। कामरूपेण कौन्तेय दुष्पुरेणानलेन च॥३८॥
Hindi Translation
जिस प्रकार धुएँ से अग्नि और मैल से दर्पण ढका जाता है तथा जिस प्रकार जेर से गर्भ ढका रहता है, वैसे ही उस काम के द्वारा यह ज्ञान ढका रहता है॥३८॥ और हे अर्जुन ! इस अग्नि के समान कभी न पूर्ण होने वाले कामरूप ज्ञानीयों के नित्य बैरी के द्वारा मनुष्य का ज्ञान ढका हुआ है ॥३८॥
English Translation
As fire is covered by smoke, and a mirror by dust, and the embryo is covered by the womb, so is knowledge covered by desire. As a flame is covered by smoke, mirror by dirt, and embryo by the amnion, so is Knowledge covered by it (desire).

Verse 39
आवृतं ज्ञानमेतेन ज्ञानिनो नित्यवैरिणा। कामरूपेण कौन्तेय दुष्पूरेणानलेन च।।२६॥
Hindi Translation
और हे अर्जुन ! इस अग्नि के समान कभी न पूर्ण होने वाले कामरूप ज्ञानियों के नित्य वैरी के द्वारा मनुष्य का ज्ञान ढका हुआ है ।। ३६ ।।
English Translation
And, Arjuna, Knowledge stand covered by this eternal enemy of the wise, known as desire, which is insatiable like fire.

Verse 40
इन्द्रियाणि मनो बुद्धिरस्याधिष्ठानमुच्यते। एतेर्विमोहयत्येष ज्ञानमावृत्य देहिनम्॥४०॥
Hindi Translation
इन्द्रियाँ, मन और बुद्धि—ये सब इसके वासस्थान कहे जाते हैं। यह काम इन मन, बुद्धि और इन्द्रियों द्वारा ही ज्ञान को आच्छादित करके जीवात्मा को मोहित करता है ॥४०॥
English Translation
The senses, mind and intellect are said to be its seat; these delude the embodied soul, covering the knowledge.

Verse 41
तस्मात्त्वमिन्द्रियाण्यादौ नियम्य भरतर्षभ | पापमां प्रजहि हेनं ज्ञानविज्ञाननाशनम् ॥४१॥
Hindi Translation
इसलिए हे अर्जुन! तू पहले इन्द्रियों को वश में करके इस ज्ञान और विज्ञान का नाश करने वाले महान पापी काम को अवश्य ही बलपूर्वक मार डाल ॥४१॥
English Translation
Therefore, Arjuna, you must first control your senses; and then kill this evil thing which obstructs Jñāna (Knowledge of the Absolute or Nirguna Brahma) and vijñāna (Knowledge of Sakar Brahma or manifest Divinity). (41)

Verse 42
इन्द्रियौं को स्थूल शरीर से परे यानि श्रेष्ठ, बलवान् और सूक्ष्म कहते हैं; इन इन्द्रियों से परे मन है, मन से भी परे बुद्धि है और जो बुद्धि से भी अन्न्यन्त परे है वह आत्मा है ॥४२॥
Hindi Translation
इन्द्रियौं को स्थूल शरीर से परे यानि श्रेष्ठ, बलवान् और सूक्ष्म कहते हैं; इन इन्द्रियों से परे मन है, मन से भी परे बुद्धि है और जो बुद्धि से भी अन्न्यन्त परे है वह आत्मा है।
English Translation
The senses are said to be greater than the body; but greater than the senses is the mind. Greater than the mind is the intellect; and what is greater than the intellect is he (the Self).

Verse 43
एवं बुद्धे परं बुद्ध्वा संस्तभ्यात्मानमात्मना। जहि शत्रुं महाबाहो कामरूपं दुरासदम्॥४३॥
Hindi Translation
इस प्रकार बुद्धि से परे अर्थात् सूक्ष्म, बलवान् और अत्यन्त श्रेष्ठ आत्मा को जानकर और बुद्धि के द्वारा मन को वश में करके हे महाबाहो! तू इस कामरूप दुर्जय शत्रु को मार डाल।
English Translation
Thus, Arjuna, knowing that which is higher than the intellect and subduing the mind by reason, kill this enemy in the form of Desire that is hard to overcome.

Verse 1
इमं विवस्वते योगं प्रोक्तवानहमव्ययम् | विवस्वान्मनवे प्राह मनुरिक्ष्वाकुजेव्रवीत || 1 ||
Hindi Translation
श्री भगवान बोले—मैंने इस अविनाशी योग को सूर्य से कहा था, सूर्य ने अपने पुत्र वैवस्वत मनु से कहा और मनु ने अपने पुत्र राजा इक्ष्वाकु से कहा ||1||
English Translation
Sri Bhagavan said: I taught this immortal Yoga to Vivasvan (Sun-god); Vivasvan conveyed it to Manu (his son); and Manu imparted it to (his son) Iksvaku.

Verse 2
एवं परम्पराप्राप्तमिमं राजर्षयो विदुः । स कालेनेह महता योगो नष्टः परंतप ॥२॥
Hindi Translation
हे परन्तप अर्जुन ! इस प्रकार परम्परा से प्राप्त इस योग को राजर्षियों ने जाना; किंतु उसके बाद वह योग बहुत काल से इस पृथ्वी लोक में लुप्तप्राय हो गया ॥२॥
English Translation
Thus transmitted in succession from father to son, Arjuna, this Yoga remained known to the Rajarsis (royal sages). It has, however, long since disappeared from this earth. (2)

Verse 3
स एवायं मया तेज्ञ योगः प्रोक्तः पुरातनः । भक्तोऽसि मे सखा चेति रहस्यं ह्येतदुत्तमम् ॥३॥
Hindi Translation
तू मेरा भक्त और प्रिय सखा है, इसलिए वही यह पुरातन योग आज मैंने तुझको कहा है; क्योंकि यह बड़ा ही उत्तम रहस्य है अर्थात् गुप्त रखने योग्य विषय है ॥३॥
English Translation
The same ancient Yoga has this day been imparted to you by Me, because you are My devotee and friend; and also because this is a supreme secret. (3)

Verse 4
अपरं भवतो जन्म परं जन्म विवस्वतः। कथमेतद्विजानीयां त्वमादौ प्रोक्तवानिति।।४।।
Hindi Translation
अर्जुन बोले— आपका जन्म तो अवर्चीन—अभी हाल का है और सूर्य का जन्म बहुत पुराना है अर्थात् कल्प के आदि में हो चुका था; तब मैं इस बात को कैसे समझूँ कि आप ही ने कल्प के आदि में सूर्य से यह योग कहा था।।४।।
English Translation
Arjuna said: You are of recent origin, while the birth of Vivasvan dates back to remote antiquity. How, then, am I to believe that You taught this Yoga at the beginning of creations?

Verse 5
बहूनि मे व्यतीतानि जन्मानि तव चार्जुन। तान्यहं वेद सर्वाणि न त्वं वेथ परंतप।।५।।
Hindi Translation
श्रीभगवान बोले— हे परन्तप अर्जुन! मेरे और तेरे
English Translation
The Blessed Lord said: Many, many births both you and I have passed. I can remember all of them, but you cannot, O subduer of the enemy.

Verse 6
अजोऽपि सन्नव्ययात्मा भूतानामीश्वरःऽपि सन् । प्रकृतिं स्वामधिष्ठाय संभवाम्यात्ममायया ॥६॥
Hindi Translation
मैं अजन्मा और अविनाशी स्वरूप होते हुए भी तथा समस्त प्राणियों का ईश्वर होते हुए भी अपनी प्रकृति को अधीन करके अपनी योगमाया से प्रकट होता हूँ ॥६॥
English Translation
Though birthless and deathless, and the Lord of all beings, I manifest Myself through My own Yogamaya (divine potency), keeping My Nature (Prakrti) under control. (6)
