Verse 19
तानहं द्विषतः क्रूरांसंसारेषु नराधमाः । क्षिपाम्यजसमशुभानासुरीषुेव योनििषु ॥१९॥
Hindi Translation
उन द्वेष करने वाले पापाचारी और क्रूरकर्मी नराधमों को मैं संसार में बार-बार आसुरी योनिों में ही डालता हूँ ॥१९॥
English Translation
These haters, sinful, cruel and vilest among men, I cast again and again into demoniacal wombs in this world. (19)

Verse 20
में आसुरी योनि को प्राप्त होते हैं, फिर उससे भी अति नीच गति को ही प्राप्त होते हैं अर्थात् घोर नरकों में पड़ते हैं ॥२०॥
Hindi Translation
में आसुरी योनि को प्राप्त होते हैं, फिर उससे भी अति नीच गति को ही प्राप्त होते हैं अर्थात् घोर नरकों में पड़ते हैं ॥२०॥
English Translation
Failing to reach Me, Arjun, these stupid souls are born life after life in demoniac wombs and then verily sink down to a still lower plane.

Verse 21
त्रिविधं नरकस्येदं द्वारं नाशनमात्मनः। कामः क्रोधस्तथा लोभस्तस्मादेतत्त्रयं त्यजेत्॥२१॥
Hindi Translation
काम, क्रोध तथा लोभ—ये तीन प्रकार के नरक के द्वार आत्मा का नाश करने वाले अर्थात् उसको अधोगति में ले जाने वाले हैं। अतएव इन तीनों को त्याग देना चाहिये ॥२१॥
English Translation
Desire, anger and greed— this triple gate of hell brings about the ruination of the soul. Therefore, one should, avoid all these three.

Verse 22
एतैर्विमुक्तः कौन्तेय तमोऽरौद्धिभिर्नरः | आचरत्यात्मनः श्रेयस्ततो याति परं गतिम् || २२ ||
Hindi Translation
हे अर्जुन ! इन तीनों नरक के द्वारों से मुक्त पुरुष अपने कल्याण का आचरण करता है, इससे वह परमगति को जाता है अर्थात् मुझको प्राप्त हो जाता है ॥ २२ ॥
English Translation
Freed from these three gates of hell, man works his own salvation and thereby attains the supreme goal i.e., God. (22)

Verse 23
यः शास्त्रविधिमुत्सृज्य वर्तते कामकारतः | न स सिद्धिमाप्नोति न सुखं न परं गतिम् || २३ ||
Hindi Translation
जो पुरुष शास्त्र विधि को त्याग कर अपनी इच्छा से मनमाना आचरण करता है, वह न सिद्धि को प्राप्त होता है, न परमगति को और न सुख को ही ॥ २३ ॥
English Translation
Having cast aside the injunctions of the scriptures, he who acts in an arbitrary way according to his own sweet will neither attains perfection nor the supreme goal nor even happiness. (23)

Verse 24
तस्माच्छास्त्रं प्रमाणं ते कार्याकार्यव्यवस्थितौ । ज्ञात्वा शास्त्रविधानोक्तं कर्म कर्तुमिहाहमिति ॥२४॥
Hindi Translation
इससे तेरे लिये इस कर्तव्य और अकर्तव्य की व्यवस्था में शास्त्र ही प्रमाण है। ऐसा जानकर तू शास्त्रविधि से नियत कर्म ही करने योग्य है॥२४॥
English Translation
Therefore, the scripture alone is your guide in determining what should be done and what should not be done. Knowing this, you ought to perform only such action as is ordained by the scriptures.

Verse 1
ये शास्त्रविधिमुत्सृज्य यजन्ते श्रद्धयान्विताः | तेषां निष्ठा तु का कृष्ण सत्यमाहो रजस्तमः ॥१७-१॥
Hindi Translation
अर्जुन बोले—हे कृष्ण! जो मनुष्य शास्त्रविधि को त्यागकर श्रद्धा से युक्त हुए देवादिका पूजन करते हैं, उनकी स्थिति फिर कौन-सी है? सात्त्विकी है अथवा राजसी या तमसी?
English Translation
Arjuna said: Those who endowed with faith, worship gods and others casting aside the injunctions of the scriptures, where do they stand, Krsna,— in Sattva, Rajas or Tamas?

Verse 2
त्रिविधा भवति श्रद्धा देहिनां सा स्वभावजा | सात्त्विकी राजसी चैव तामसी चेति तां श्रुणु ॥२॥
Hindi Translation
श्रीभगवानु बोले—मनुष्यों की वह शास्त्रीय संस्कारों से रहित केवल स्वभाव से उत्पन्न श्रद्धा सात्त्विकी और राजसी तथा तामसी—ऐसे तीनों प्रकार की ही होती है। उसको तू मुझसे सुन ॥२॥
English Translation
Sri Bhagavan said: that untutored innate faith of men is of three kinds—Sattvika and Rajasika and Tamasika. Hear of it from Me.

Verse 3
सत्त्वानुरूपा सर्वस्य श्रद्धा भवति भारत । श्रद्धामयोऽयं पुरुषो यो यच्छ्रद्धः स एव सः ॥३॥
Hindi Translation
हे भारत! सभी मनुष्यों की श्रद्धा उनके अन्तःकरण के अनुरूप होती है। यह पुरुष श्रद्धामय है, इसलिये जो पुरुष जैसी श्रद्धावाला है वह स्वयं भी वही है ॥३॥
English Translation
The faith of all men conforms to their mental constitution, Arjuna. This man consists of faith; whatever the nature of his faith, he is verily that. (17.3)

Verse 4
यजन्ते सात्त्विका देवान्यक्षरक्षांसि राजसाः | प्रेताभूतगणांश्चान्ये यजन्ते तामसाः जनाः || ४ ||
Hindi Translation
सात्त्विक पुरुष देवों को पूजते हैं, राजस पुरुष यक्ष और राक्षसों को तथा अन्य जो तामस पुरुष हैं, वे प्रेत और भूतगणों को पूजते हैं ॥४॥
English Translation
Men of a Sattvika disposition worship gods; those of Rajasika temperament worship demigods and demons; while others, who are men of a Tamasika disposition, worship the spirits of the dead and groups of ghosts.

Verse 5
अशास्त्रविहितं घोरं तप्यन्ते ये तपो जनाः | दम्भाहंकारसंयुक्ताः कामरागबलान्विताः || ५ ||
Hindi Translation
जो मनुष्य शास्त्रविधि से रहित केवल मनःकल्पित घोर तप को तपते हैं तथा दम्भ और अहंकार से युक्त एवं कामना, आसक्ति और बल के अभिमान से भी युक्त हैं; ॥५॥
English Translation
Those who perform severe austerities not ordained by scriptural injunctions, motivated by pride and arrogance, and attached to desire, passion, and the sense of strength, are known as the austerity people.

Verse 6
कर्षयन्तः शरीरस्थं भूतप्राममचेतसः | मा चैवान्तःशरीरस्थं तान्विद्ध्यासुरीश्वरयाण् ॥६॥
Hindi Translation
जो शरीर रूप से स्थित भूत समुदाय को और अन्तःकरण में स्थित मुझ परमात्मा को भी कूश करने वाले हैं, उन अज्ञानीयों को तू आसुर-स्वभाव वाले जान ॥६॥
English Translation
And who emaciate the elements constituting their body as well as Me, the supreme Spirit, dwelling in their heart,—know these senseless people to have a demoniac disposition. (6)
